AOH President’s Message
Happy Independence Day everyone. This July 4th is a special occasion as we celebrate 250 years of independence and freedom. These liberties should not be taken lightly. Many people sacrificed so much for our country, and we should take time to remember and thank those who answered the call to defend our freedom.
Irish people made many contributions to American history, from the colonial settlements and Revolutionary War to the first Irish American president, John F. Kennedy. Eight men of Irish birth signed the Declaration of Independence, and Irish soldiers later played an important role during the Civil War, including the Fighting 69th.
AOH Division 2 has been awarded a grant from the National AOH for the Hibernian Hunger Project. National President Sean Pender expressed his sincere gratitude for the efforts of St. Patrick’s Division 2.
Last month, Division 2 held a food-pantry drive for St. Joseph’s Church in Babylon. Thank you to brothers Tim Kerr and Jim Davis for organizing the collection, and to all members who continue supporting our food drives and charitable work.
The annual boat cruise around the Great South Bay was also a wonderful opportunity for members to socialize and enjoy one another’s company. The Roche brothers provided music for the evening.
We also welcome the new brothers initiated this past June. The experience members receive from the Hibernians is directly related to the time and effort they put into it, and new members are encouraged to join a committee and become involved.
AOH Division 2 is celebrating its 80th anniversary this year. Planning is underway, and volunteers will be needed to help with the celebration.
